Vauxhall has released the first images of its Mokka small sport-utility vehicle, which goes on sale in the UK at the end of the year after being unveiled at the Geneva motor show in March.

The Mokka will be offered with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. Power comes from two petrol engines and one diesel, all equipped with fuel-saving stop-start systems. The petrol units are a naturally aspirated 1.6 with 113bhp or a turbocharged 1.4 developing 138bhp. The 1.7-litre turbodiesel has 128bhp. Both more powerful engines will be offered with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

Front-wheel drive is standard, although four-wheel-drive versions will have a system that automatically transfers drive to the rear wheels.

Vauxhall is keen to promote the car’s practicality, claiming a generous cargo volume of up to 1,372 litres and the latest generation Flex-Fix bicycle carrier that is fully integrated into the rear underbody, allowing the carriage of up to three bicycles.

All models will have electronic stability and traction control, hill start assist and hill descent control systems as standard. Front- and rear-facing cameras will also be offered, the former incorporating lane departure warning and forward collision alerts, as well as traffic sign recognition.

Car collecting has surged in popularity over the past several decades. Car rallies, old timers’ car parades and other car related events are regularly hosted around the world. Car collecting is a serious hobby for a lot of people. It can also be a rather expensive one.

Knowing where to go and what to look for in a used collector’s car can be a challenge, especially if it is your first time. One of the most sought after brands are old used Ford automatic cars however, there are many brands and models that remain in hot demand.

Before making a purchase, decide if you really want to own a classic car. Keep in mind that these cars will not drive or brake as nicely, or be as smooth a ride as the current model vehicles. Many people who buy a classic model without driving it first are disappointed for this reason.

If you are buying a classic model for pure joy, it is important to do your research. Find out how many cars of this particular model were produced. You should search for original colours and also learn how to decipher the VIN code for additional information about your classic model.

It is also wise to be aware of counterfeits. Unfortunately, this is an easy business for the dishonest to deceive a consumer. This is another area in which doing your research will be beneficial. You may be able to detect fake VIN tags yourself. The more information you know ahead of time, the more accurate a decision you can make when choosing your used classic car.

Over recent years, car safety has improved dramatically. Nowadays most new cars come with ABS, SIPS, ESC and many other seemingly confusing acronyms. Before buying a used car you should familiarise yourself with the above terms so you can be sure that you know which safety features come as standard with the car you want. It is important to note that not all car manufacturers implement identical safety features on to their vehicles. For example, a used Ford Fiesta will not have the same features as a used Seat Leon so by understanding which safety features you want, so you will be able to purchase a car that meets your requirements.

An Antilock Braking System (ABS) has been a standard feature of all cars since 2004, so you can be assured that any used cars from that year or later will come with ABS. ABS ensures that under heavy braking, your wheels will not lock, thereby increasing control of your car and shortening the braking distance.

The Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) was developed by Volvo in 1991 and is now a standard feature of most cars. Metal beams are placed along the side of the vehicle and during a crash they absorb much of the energy, reducing the risk to passengers.

A newer safety feature of cars is the Electronic Stability control (ESC). ESC acts by detecting when the driver’s course has diverged from the intended course and selectively applying individual braking to minimize the chance of an accident.

Many more safety features do exist, and are constantly evolving. Remember to research well before purchasing, as safety is paramount.

When buying a used car there is plenty of paperwork that you should ask to see before buying. This may seem like a boring and time consuming process but it is recommended to make sure you do not get any unfortunate surprises at a later date.

V5 Vehicle Registration Document

This will show the name of the registered keeper of the car. If the seller is not the registered keeper, question why – perhaps they are selling the vehicle on behalf of someone else. The V5 document will also list other keepers and a thorough buyer will contact them to discuss their experiences with the car and any car repairs that they have made.

MOT Certificate

If the car you are buying is over three years old, check that there is an annual MOT certificate. From these you can check that mileage matches the mileage on the service records and in turn the mileage on the motor. Contact the garage that carried out the MOT if you need verification.

Handbook

Check the car’s handbook to find out what keys came with the car when it was originally purchased. Every car should have at least one spare key. If the car you are buying does not, make sure to ask why.

Invoice

Make sure the seller writes or prints an invoice for you both. A sales contract is also recommended, stating the deal and that the balance has been paid. This can help prevent any foul play later.

Motorists reeling from the effects of the current economic crisis are increasingly looking for ways to cut down on car running costs. Some solutions are fairly radical – these involve selling their current car and investing in more efficient models, making use of car clubs, or using public transport. Other simpler answers include finding cheaper sources of petrol and MOTs.

According to one report based on RAC figures, the costs of running a new car amount to well over ₤2000 yearly – and that’s not even taking into account things like finance costs or depreciation. Besides fuel cost savings, road tax prices are heavily biased in favour of newer, fuel-efficient ‘greener’ cars.

Shopping around for a cheaper source of fuel is another way to save. Registering with a ‘cheapest petrol price’ website is easy and accessible with a phone ‘app’ as well. The name of the petrol station with current cheapest prices in the area is supplied weekly by email or on request.

It pays to shop around at MOT time as well While the government recommended price for the basic MOT is ₤54.85, many motorists have found themselves presented with huge bills, particularly when the MOT test has been done by a garage that does servicing and/or ‘repairs needed to pass’ as well. A testing station such as those run by the local council, that does no car repairs or servicing, will always be a cheaper option.

Finally, one of the more obvious strategies is driving at or under the speed limit. The AA has calculated that this results in a minimum saving of ₤110 per year per 12,000 miles.

1. A bigger house, but not too big! – Of course, I’d buy a bigger house maybe 5-6 bedrooms with lots of land and a big garage to store my cars.
2. A faster car – I know I’ve just bought a new car (VW Polo) and it’s great, but if I had the money I’d get something expensive like a Lamborghini or Koenigsegg and probably a couple of American muscle cars or hot rods.
3. An outdoor Jacuzzi – it has to be done doesn’t it, just imagine chilling out in your Jacuzzi and sipping some Champagne, brilliant!
4. Go on expensive holidays – another must if I won the lottery. Don’t know where I’d go but I’m sure I’d find the perfect destinations if money was no object.
5. Treat my family and friends – because what’s the point of having all that money if you don’t have anyone to spend it with.

Flicking through the local paper at the weekend I came across an advert for the new Volkswagen Polo Match that caught my eye. I’ve been thinking of trading my car in (a six year old Ford Mondeo) for a while now and getting something a bit smaller and more economical and the Polo looks like it fits the bill.

The Polo Match comes with alloy wheels, air conditioning, iPod dock and fog lights as standard, as well as 1 year’s free insurance and 3 years servicing all for just £195 a month. The local advertisement also said that they will give you 12 months free fuel up to 8,000 miles and I had to have a closer look.

I phoned my local dealer up and booked a test drive for later today, I have cut out the newspaper advert and will take that along with me.

I’ll let you know what I think of the car in another post, but it looks like a darn good deals to me.

Although used cars offer many advantages, you will need to take steps to ensure that you are provided with a vehicle that is right for you and in good condition. One of the main problems that are often encountered when selecting a used car is buying from the wrong seller.

In order to increase your chances of finding your ideal car, such as a used Mini, used Mazda, or any other make of car you are interested in, you will need to do plenty of research. You will need to decide if you wish to buy your used car from a private dealer. Often this option is chosen by those who quickly require a used car, as a private sale is usually straightforward. However, when opting for a private dealer, you will need to find out everything you can about the car that is being sold. Avoid vehicles that have not been properly inspected. Always make sure you arrange a test drive.

Many private car dealers will place adverts in papers or leave their cars outside their home with a sign indicating that it is for sale. Avoid choosing dealers that include very little information in their adverts or dealers that seem unwilling to answer any questions about the car. A good, trustworthy dealer should be willing to help and provide you with plenty of details about the car they are selling.

If you opt for a car supermarket, avoid selecting the first one that you find and take the time to explore what is available.

When buying a used car from a private seller, it is important to be vigilant. Opting for a private seller will provide you with risks, so it is important to seek out a trustworthy dealer to increase your chances of finding a good quality used car at a price that suits you.

Before choosing a private dealer, consider what type of vehicle you are looking for and work out a budget. This way, you can search for dealers that can offer you what you are looking for at a reasonable price. The internet is a great way of finding dealers offering second hand cars in your local area. You can also browse advertisements in local newspapers, although you will need to be careful when choosing a private dealer in this manner, especially with adverts that provide limited details about the car being sold.

To increase your chances of obtaining good quality used cars from a private dealer, you will need to arrange a viewing and create a list of questions to ask. Take the time to find out everything you can about the car that is being sold, such as details on mileage, what the dealer’s reasons are for selling the car, and whether they will allow you to have the car inspected professionally. Any dealer that refuses to answer questions or allow an inspection of the vehicle should be avoided.

Once you have viewed the car and made sure that it is in the condition described in the advert, you can begin discussing a price.

I’ve just read a funny report on the BBC website that shows one of Barack Obama’s limousines getting stuck as it left the US embassy in Dublin. The video shows that the bottom of the car grounds as it comes up a slight incline at the gates of the embassy.

Security officials denied that the president was in the car, stating that they were in the car behind with the grounded car carrying staff and support personnel.

You would of thought that General Motors, who made the bomb and bullet proof limousines would of thought that the car might come across a ramp in its time, but seem to have neglected to fit them with any sort of adjustable suspension.

In my opinion this causes a major security risk and maybe that’s something they will address when the cars get back to the US.
