Who will replace Fabio Capello? The Contenders

Fabio Capello shocked the FA and England as he resigned from the England job just four months away from Euro 2012. It is now important for the FA to install a new manager as soon as possible, but just who are the contenders for the job.

Harry Redknapp

Harry is the bookies and many other peoples favourite to take over as England boss. He has turned round the fortunes of Tottenham Hotspurs since he took over and has managed in the Champions League. Tottenham are sitting pretty in the Premier League and could still win the prestigious prize. Whether Harry would want the job is a different matter.

Stuart Pearce

The current England under-21 manager and recently confirmed as Team GB’s manager at the Olympics, Stuart Pearce has international experience although not at senior level. He has a lack of club experience, but has nurtured the under 21 England team, which is producing some great talent such as Danny Welbeck, Phil Jones and Jack Wilshere.

Roy Hodgson

Roy was tipped to replace Capello after the 2010 Wold Cup, but decided to join Liverpool instead. His rough spell for the Reds ended after a few months and he is now at West Brom. He has vast managerial experience, taking Switzerland to the 1994 World Cup.

Jose Mourinho

Jose is probably an outside bet for the England job. He has won just about everything including two Premier Leagues, two League Cups and an FA Cup at Chelsea. It looks unlikely that Mourinho will be chosen as Capello’s replacement as his salary demands and fiery temperament are surely too high.

  • Manchester United bounce back in FA Cup

I didn’t have high hopes for yesterday’s FA Cup game between Manchester United and Manchester City after United had lost their last two games, but the lads bounced back and put Manchester City back in their place (at least for the moment).

The game ended 3-2 to Manchester United, but it wasn’t without its controversy. Vincent Kompany was sent off early in the match after a reckless challenge on Nani, but should it of been red? Although he didn’t hit the player Kompany’s challenge was two footed and dangerous. The referee made his mind up quickly to send the play off. I think it was at least a yellow card offence, but have seen red cards for those tackles before.

Manchester |United capitalised on the man advantage and rose to a 3-0 lead at half time. Manchester City rallied in the second half as United took the foot off the gas and brought it back to 3-2; the last 20 minutes were edge of your seat, but at least we won in the end.

Hopefully the team can kick on from here and put a decent run together; bring on Liverpool in the next round.

  • It doesn’t happen very often, especially at Old Trafford, but Man Utd sunk to their heaviest defeat in nearly 50 years to the hands of Man City. I have to congratulated City, they came out attacking after the first 20 minutes and really put Utd to the sword, but it’s not the end of the world for Utd fans.

Yes the team played dreadfully and it was even worse when Johnny Evans g tent off, but you know this will never happen again as long as Sir Alex is at the helm. Man Utd definitely have some problems especially in centre midfield and the defence looked ropey today, but with Vidic coming back hopefully the defence will steady.

The midfield is a totally different situation though and I think that Sir Alex really needs to bring in some decent midfielders in January if we are to retain the league title. I really don’t rate Anderson or Carrick (who didn’t play thankfully), and I don’t think that Fletcher has recovered fully from his illness.

I would have liked to see Sir Alex play a 4-5-1 against Man City to try and stifle their midfield, but he decided for his preferred 4-4-2, which really backfired.

Man Utd are by no means out of the running for the league and have had their best start to a season for the last decade. United always come good towards Christmas and having played all of the top teams so far I expect them to kick on now after this defeat, but a tough tie at Everton next weekend will be a tricky one.

  • I was randomly searching eBay the other day as you do, and ended up winning an auction for a signed Manchester United shirt. It is signed by 22 of the 2010-2011 squad including Rooney, Hernandez and Van Der Sar and I have decided to get it framed for my games room.

I’ve also ordered a frame so I can mount it myself and ordered a plaque to commemorate the team’s 19th league championship. All in all it has cost just under £100 which I think is a bargain, but I would say that being a Man Utd fan. The shirt comes with a COA certificate so the signatures are real and I think it’s a great investment for the future and a great piece of memorabilia.

I’ll post some pictures up when I get it framed so you can all see it.

  • Free bets on the football

I recently joined William Hill’s online betting site as I plan to do some football bets (I thought it might be good as I’m always predicting who’s going to win and get it right most of the time). With William Hill when you join you can claim up to £25 free bets so I’m going to choose a couple of football matches to bet on.

Its UEFA Cup football tonight so there’s lots to choose from, but I’m quite fancying Rubin Kazan to beat Shamrock Rovers, Tottenham to beat PAOK Salonika and Paris Saint-Germain to beat Salzburg. Might also have a go on Atletico Madrid to beat Celtic as I have a feeling they’ve got no chance having already been knocked out of both competitions before being let back in after FC Sion were banned for fielding an illegitimate player.

I’ll choose a few bets tonight and let you all know what happens.

  • Transfer window has ended – my impressions

Firstly, with Manchester United having all of their summer signings done and dusted before the last day it is time to look at the other Premier League teams.

Arsenal – Arteta, Benayoun, Santos, Mertesacker

Arsene Wenger has been busy in the transfer market after the humiliating 8-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United on Sunday. Four players came in on deadline day as Arsenal look to strengthen their midfield and defence. The players look like they could stop the rot in London but only time will tell. Arsene might regret letting Bendtner join Sunderland on loan if anything happens to Van Persie or Walcot.

QPR – Traore, Luke Young, Anton Ferdinand, Shaun Wright-Phillips

Warnock has bolstered his team yet again as he looks for Premier League survival this season and now QPR look like a team that may upset a few of the other league teams. The bargain of the day though has to be Shaun Wright-Phillips for an estimated £4 million; he is a great talent and is sure to prove himself once again.

Other transfers that caught my eye were Peter Crouch’s move to Stoke and Craig Bellamy’s move back to Liverpool.

Bring on the rest of the season, I can’t wait.
